The Strangest Town in Alaska
 
The photo on the left is from 1914, the one on the right was taken in 1998 from nearly the same spot in Bear Valley. Notice the complete absence of the glacier in 1998 - it has retreated to the left several miles, leaving behind a gouged landscape that has since been filled in by Portage Lake and new plant growth on its shores. The mountain on the right is Begich Peak, and the stream in the foreground is Placer Creek. (The mountain in the background is partially obscured by clouds in the color photo).
