The Strangest Town in Alaska
AAM Tunnel - 2000

The Anton Anderson Memorial (AAM) Tunnel interior. The open door to the left leads to one of four "safe houses" inside the refinished tunnel. Supplied with independent air and water, these are designed to keep people safe in case of a fire or partial cave-in. The three round barrel-shaped objects in the ceiling are 3 of 6 jet engines used to ventilate the 2.6-mile long tunnel, mainly to clear diesel fumes after trains pass through.

Also visible are a video camera mounted on the wall to the right and a truck's headlights straight ahead.
