Photo of Portage Glacier in 1914. The glacier completely covers the area that is now Portage Lake. The end of the glacier at center right partly covers the ground currently occupied by Gray Line of Alaska's Portage Glacier Cruise Terminal, which launches a tour boat into the lake. For some fantastic aerial views of Portage Glacier, visit Kristine Cossen's web page about Portage Glacier. For those interested in the geology of the area, also be sure to read her "Guide to The Little Ice Age Landforms and Glacial Dynamics in Portage Valley and Portage Pass", which is worthwhile reading if you have an Adobe Acrobat Reader, and are prepared for a big file (nearly 4 Megabytes) |
