Portage Glacier - 1914

A daring member of the U.S. Coast & Geodetic Survey team cruises past the face of Portage Glacier in 1914. This photo was taken from Bear Valley, just yards from the location of the new road to Whittier. Compare this photo with one from 1998 to see how drastic the retreat of Portage glacier has been.
